Meghnad Saha

Meghnad Saha was an Indian scientist in the field of ‘astrophysics’. He was born on 6th October, 1893 at Dhaka (now in Bangladesh). His father’s name was Jagannath.

Education: His early education took place at Dhaka. He started his schooling at Middle School and then admitted at Dhaka Collegiate School. Later on, he came to Kolkata (previously Calcutta) and joined the Presidency college. He was a classmate of Satyendranath Bose.

Career: He was a professor of Physics and Mathematics at Calcutta University (CU). He also served Allahabad University as a teacher.

Achievements and Major Works: His most important work is the ‘Theory of Thermal effect on ion”, also known as ‘Saha ionization equation”. He established the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics at Kolkata.

He was also the key person behind the prestigious river valley project, Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC). He became a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1952.

Death: He died on 16th February, 1956 at Delhi in India.
