This article contains information about the family life of Aryan people during the Rig Vedic Period (also early Vedic Period).

 

The family life of Aryan people were very simple, but very well organized under the headship of the eldest member of the family.

 

The family system was based on the patriarchal form of society where the father or the grandfather wielded the supreme authority.

 

The family was known as Girih or Kula and Putra was the title of father which had its origin from the Sanskrit word ‘Pa’ meaning ‘to protect’. He was responsible for looking after the welfare and the life and property of the family.

 

The family, as a rule, was on the basis of joint responsibility where women enjoyed a very respectable position.

 

The family prayer was usually led by the head of the family in which the women could also join and sometimes would take a leading part.
