A postman (also postal carrier, letter carrier) is a person who delivers letter and parcels at the destination address. A postman works at the Postal service department that is commonly known as post-office.
The postal service department of India is known as ‘India Posts’. India has a large postal system with over 150,000 post offices. In United States, a postman is officially known as ‘letter carrier’.
Postmen are familiar figures in all localities. In busy metropolitan cities, they go around the city at least twice every day. In suburbs and villages their visits are irregular.
The postman usually carries a bag which contains letters, money-orders, magazines, etc. Registered letters and articles are, usually, delivered by postmen of higher rank.
We depend on the postal service for communication with people living in various parts of India and abroad. The postman, by delivering letters and goods at our doorstep, completes that work.
We all expect the postman at our house to deliver letters of our dear ones. A postman serves as the most important link between man and man. He brings the good news of one’s employment, or marriage, or confirmation of a business deal or selection of a story for publication and so on. He is, therefore, always eagerly watched.
Postman moves from door-to-door, delivering mails, in all seasons. During extreme heat of summer and on rainy days he carries an umbrella in addition to his usual burden. But most importantly, he carries a great responsibility on his shoulder. He must not miss or lose a single paper. He remains punctual and keeps himself fit for job. He is one of the true friends we need in our social life.
It is our responsibility to take due care to make his task a bit easier. We should write the address on letter in way that is legible. This small amount of caution on our part will help the post-man to avoid a lot of unnecessary trouble while delivering the letters.
Now, basic telephone has reached many houses. Courier services are fast becoming popular. One might think that the importance of the postman has been minimizes. But that is not the reality. Telephones are often out of order, and courier service is too costly for most people. So there is still no alternative to the basic postal service, and we depend fully on the ungrudging service of good postmen.
