Great Himalayan National Park (Himachal Pradesh)
The Great Himalayan National Park is situated in Kulu district of Himachal Pradesh. The Park was established in the year 1984. It is spread over an area of 1171 sq. km.
Connectivity: The nearest town and the airport from the park is Kulu at a distance of about 50 km. The nearest railway station is Joginder Nagar which is nearly 100 km from the park.
Climate: The climate of this park is temperate alpine. The average height of the park is 2500 meter from the sea-level. The park is inaccessible for most part of the year and is endowed with bio-diversity rich forests. Tree species found here are blue pine, chir, oak, rhododendron, deodar and bamboo.
Animals and birds: The fauna consist of brown bear, snow-leopard, common leopard, fox, wolf, civets, goral, jungle cat, marten, blue sheep, Himalayan tahr, Rhesus macaque, Himalayan flying squirrel, langur and musk deer, etc. The park is very rich in birdlife. It is best known for being the habitat of Western Tragopan. Other pheasants found here are cheer, koklas and monal, etc. Other birds include griffon, vulture, white capped redstarts, golden eagle, flycatchers, flowerpeckers, thrushes, woodpeckers, dippers, tits and raptors of different kinds.
Best Season: The best season for visiting the park is between September-November and April-June. Rest houses and huts are available for the tourists.
