Our Duty to the Poor

Generally people say that God helps the poor and the rich can help themselves. Man is God like, when he helps the poor.

It is our duty to help the poor. Some rich man think that God punishes the wicked by making them poor. They believe to escape that punishment, the rich should help the poor. It is their sacred duty.

Others believe that people become poor because they are lazy. It is not always the case. We often find that only those are poor that work the hardest. The rich sit idle. Their money works. They become richer. In fact chance favours them. These days we find that sometimes the most wicked man wins the lottery and in a moment he becomes rich.

I believe that God loves the poor. This is why he has made mostly poor man. Poverty is a blessing. It is easier for a camel to pass through the eyes of a needle than a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. God sends the poor to test the rich. So those in favourable circumstances should not fail in their duty towards the poor.

But how to help them best is the problem. If we give them money, it may give them temporary relief. Better we should give them some work. We should find some means of permanent income. That is a better way of helping them. Those who are disabled and invalids should be brought up by the Government in Poor-houses. The poor man requires something more than money. He wants sympathy. He wants love. He wants helpful laws. We all know the line: “Laws grind the poor and rich man rule the laws”.

Fortunately our beloved Prime Minister has decided to drive away poverty from our country. Let us co-operate with her in his noble task. We should make the hands of our Prime Minister strong. Then alone he will be able to remove poverty from this country. If poverty is not uprooted, our country will not prosper.
