Astor, Nancy, Lady (1879-1964), The first female MP to sit in the House of Commons. Born Nancy Witcher Langhorne in the US, she stood for her husband’s Plymouth constituency when he succeeded to his father’s peerage (1919). She won the, seat and retained it until her retirement in 1945. In Parliament she tirelessly supported women’s interests and children’s welfare and opposed the drink trade. As a political hostess at Cliveden, her country house, she had considerable in-fluence on government policy.
