Attlee, Clement, Earl

 

Attlee, Clement, Earl (1883-1967). British Labour politician. The son of a solicitor, he became converted to socialism at Oxford and abandoned a legal career for social work in London. After serving in World War I, he entered Parliament and held office in the two prewar Labour governments, becoming leader of the party in 1935. He served as deputy prime minister in Churchill’s wartime coalition and became prime minister after the sweeping Labour victory in 1945. During his term of office he presided over the creation of the Welfare State and the nationalization of major industries. He retired from active politics in 1955.
