Baden-Powell Robert Lord
Baden-Powell Robert Lord (1857-1941). British general, founder of the Scout movement. He served in India and Africa, commanding the defence of Mafeking (1899-1900) with a small garrison during the Boer War. His training book Aids to Scouting (1899) began to be used for training boys, and this led to the creation of the Boy Scouts in 1908. In 1910 he left the army to lead the Scouts full-time, and with his sister Agnes (1858-1945) founded the Girl Guides.
