Gian Lorenzo Bernini
Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680), Italian sculptor and architect. He specialized in classical subjects such as Apollo and Daphne (1624), with some religious works such as The Ecstasy of St Theresa (1645). He designed many of the churches, tombs, and fountains in Rome and also the colonnade around St Peter’s Square. The three rows of columns in the colonnade were care-fully aligned so that from a certain point in the square only one row can be seen.
