Leonard Bernstein

Leonard Bernstein (1918-90), US conductor, composer, and pianist. He became assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in 1943 and had his first success later that year when the conductor was taken ill. He went on to conduct the New York Symphony Orchestra (1945-47). He was noted for his books and concerts for young people and also lectured widely on music. His compositions include both classical and light music, his best-known Broadway score being the popular musical West Side Story (1957).
