Niels Bohr

Niels Bohr (1885-1962), Danish physicist. Bohr studied in Copenhagen, where he later became professor of physics and director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics. While working in Britain he developed a new model for the structure of the atom; for this and for work on the emission of spectra he was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics in 1922. During World War II he fled from the Nazis to the US, where he worked on the atom bomb. His son Aage Bohr (1922— ), also a scientist, shared the Nobel Prize for physics (1975) for his work on atomic theory.
