Robert Boyle
Robert Boyle (1627-91), English chemist. Born in Ireland. Boyle studied chemistry and anatomy and in 1654 established a laboratory at ”Oxford, where he and Robert Hooke invented an air pump. His experiments with gases led to the formulation of Boyle’s law, that at a constant temperature the volume of a quantity of gas is inversely proportional to its pressure. Boyle also developed tests for acidity and constructed a hermetically sealed thermometer. He is regarded as the originator of the ‘experimental method’. Bradman Sir Donald (1908) Australian cricketer. Principally a batsman, he played for New South Wales, South Australia, and Australia (1928-48), making 117 centuries in 338 first-class innings and achieving an overall average of 95.14 runs per innings (the world record). His record score of 452 not out in one innings remained unbroken for 29 years.
