Buddha, title of Siddhartha Gautama (563-483 BO), The founder of Buddhism, whose title means `enlightened one’. He was the son of a king of the warrior caste and grew tip in his father’s palace in southern Nepal. He married and spent his youthful days in luxury, protected from the harsh realities of life. At 29 he first became aware of pain and death and left his family and home in order to find a solution to these evils. While sitting under a tree (thereafter known as the Bodhi Tree), he attained enlightenment. He then traveled around northern India, teaching what he had learnt, and founded an order of monks. The doctrine of Buddhism teaches that man can overcome suffering by leading a virtuous life and thereby getting rid of the desires that cause suffering.
