George Cadbury

George Cadbury (1839-1922), British Quaker businessman and philanthropist. George and his brother Richard (1835-99) rescued their father’s cocoa and chocolate firm from economic collapse in 1861, and developed a number of schemes to improve the lives of their work people. After Richard’s death George built Bourneville, a special village with parks and sports facilities for the community. His workers were the first to have holidays, pensions, and medical services. His work influenced town planning and social welfare both in Britain and abroad.
