Hadrian, full name Publius Aelius Hadrianus (76-138 AD). Roman emperor from 117, selected by his predecessor Trajan. His rule was chiefly remarkable for his personal tours of the Empire and for his building projects, notably at Athens. He also ordered the construction of a number of defences, including Hadrian’s Wall in northern England.
