Harun ar-Rashid
Harun ar-Rashid (766-809 AD). Caliph of Baghdad. He held military commands against the Byzantine Empire from the age of 14 and succeeded his brother as caliph in 786. His encouragement of trade and industry made Baghdad prosperous, while the brilliant culture of his court is reflected in the tales of The Thousand and One Nights.
