Charles Edward Stuart
Charles Edward Stuart, known as Bonnie Prince Charlie (1720-88). The ‘Young Pretender’ to the throne of England and Scotland, grandson of James II of England. In 1745 he landed in the Hebrides and headed a Jacobite rebellion. With an army of 2000 Highlanders he entered Edinburgh and went on to invade England, reaching as far south as Derby. However, he was forced to retreat to Scotland, where he was defeated at Culloden Moor (1746). He then hid in the Scottish High-lands, with a reward of £30,000 for his capture, before escaping to France. He was aided in his escape by Flora Macdonald, who disguised him as her Irish maidservant.
