Antonio da Correggio

Antonio da Correggio (1494-1534), Italian Renaissance painter, born Antonio Allegri and named after his birthplace, Correggio, near Parma. He is famous for his soft voluptuous style and advanced use of perspective, as seen in his paintings of mythological subjects, such as Venus, Mercury and Cupid and Antiope Asleep (1525). His other works include frescoes on the ceiling of the Convent of San Paolo (1519), the dome of San Giovanni Evangelista (1520-23) in Parma, and the religious painting The Mystic Marriage of St Catherine (1526).
