Crazy Horse

Crazy Horse, Indian name Ta-Sunko-Witko (1842-77), Sioux Indian chief. A member of the Oglala tribe, he emerged as a leader of his people in their resistance to White encroachment in the 1860’s. In 1876 he helped to lead a surprise attack on General George Crook and his forces in Rosebud Valley, Montana, forcing them to withdraw. He then joined Sitting Bull in the massacre of Lt-Col. George Custer’s forces at Little Big Horn. His people weakened by hunger, he finally surrendered in May 1877. He was killed a few months later, apparently while trying to escape from prison.
