Joseph Conrad

Joseph Conrad (1857-1924), British novelist, born Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski in Poland. An orphan, he served as a sailor in merchant ships from the age of 17, taught himself English, and took British nationality in 1886. His career as a writer began with the novel Almayer’s Folly (1895). His later novels, which draw on his experiences at sea and his wide travels, include Lord Jim (1900), Heart of Darkness (1902), Nostromo (1904), and The Secret Agent (1907).
