Claude Debussy

Claude Debussy (1862-1918), French composer. He studied piano and composition at the Paris Conservatoire and won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1884. His style of composition bears many similarities to that of the French impressionist painters. Amongst his best-known works are Prelude a l’apres-midi d’un faune (1894) and Clair de lune, part of the Suite Bergamasque (1890-1905). His other works, often based on poems, include the orchestral Nocturnes (1899), the opera Pelleas and Melisande (1902), and the symphonic sketches La Mer (1905).
