Gottlieb Daimler
Gottlieb Daimler (1834-1900), German mechanical engineer. He constructed one of the first internal combustion engines, which he applied successfully to a bicycle and a four-wheeled vehicle, the world’s first motorcycle and car. In 1890 he set up the Daimler Motor Company, which built the first Mercedes car in 1899.
