Anandi Bai

Anandi Bai, d. 1794, Maharatha lady, wife of Raghunath Rao, and mother of Peshwa Baji Rao II. A very ambitious woman, she was deeply involved in the conspiracy to murder Narayanrao (d. 1773) so that her husband could become the Peshwa. She defended herself bravely against Pune forces but was captured along with her infant son, Bajirao II, and confined at Mandleshwar under the guarantee of Ahalyabai. She was allowed to join her husband in 1779 following his surrender and came to stay at Kopargaum near Nasik, still under close guard of Nana Phadnis. Her son, Baji Rao II, born at Dhar (January 1775) was the last Peshwa.
