Anarkali, fl. early 17th cent., Muhgal beauty. Originally called Nadira Begum, she was reputed to be a handmaid at the Mughal court with whom Prince Salim (later Emperor Jahangir) fell in love. On Akbar becoming aware of it, he ordered her to be buried alive. Jahangir, when he became the emperor, built a tomb over her grave, which still stands, at Lahore. The inscription ‘Oh ! could I see again the face of my lost friend, I would thank my God until the day of judgement’ was also engraved on the tomb by him.
