Duns Scotus

Duns Scotus (1265-1308), Scottish philosopher, known as the Subtle Doctor. He became a Franciscan monk and lectured at Oxford, Paris, and Cologne, where he died prematurely. Duns Scotus criticized the philosophy of Aquinas for being too theoretical, maintaining that theology should depend on practical faith, not on speculation. Du Pre, Jacqueline (1945-87). British cellist. Born in the ‘Channel Islands, she studied the cello in London and subsequently with Paul Tortelier and Mstislav Ros-tropovich. Having made her concert debut at the age of 16, she went on to perform with principal orchestras all over the world. She earned a great reputation, particularly for her performance of Elgar’s cello concerto, and in 1967 married the pianist Daniel Barenboim. In 1973 multiple sclerosis forced her to give, up her performing career, but she continued to teach the cello.
