Bibi of Cannanore

Bibi of Cannanore, later 18th cent., Moplah ruler of Cannanore, Malabar. Her State was attacked by the British in December 1783, on the charge that she was in league with Tipu Sultan of Mysore and had detained soldiers of the British army trespassing through Cannanore. She and her family were made prisoners and were released only when she signed a dictated treaty allowing the British full access to her forts. Her territories were evacuated in April 1784. On 1 August 1790, she was compelled to sign still another treaty with the British, but she later sided with TiM1 Sultan again. On 17 December 1790 Cannanore was seized by the British and their supremacy was established over Malabar.

Bird, Mary, 1789-1834, Christian missionary. She came to India in 1823, where her brother, Robert Burns, was working as an official at Gorakhpur, U.P. She learnt Hindustani, and helped in the Christian mission there. In 1830, she shifted to Calcutta and worked with Indian women in the cause of education, and propagation of Christianity in Bengal, where she died of cholera in May 1834. She also wrote some books on Christianity which were translated in Hindustani.
