Margaret Cousins

Margaret Cousins E., 1878- , social and political worker. Born in Ireland, she was the wife of Dr. James Cousins whom she married in 1903. She was also active in women’s suffrage movement in England and Ireland. She came to India in 1915 to join Annie Besant at Adyar, and became keenly interested in female education. She was an active member of the Women’s Indian Association founded in 1917, and strove hard to win voting rights for women. In 1926, she founded the All India Women’s Conference which became the most important plat-form for women’s movement. Cousins was much inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, and after his arrest in 1930, she toured all over the country mobilizing the people for national development.
