Kumara Devi

Kumara Devi, 320-30, Gupta queen. A princess of the powerful Lichchhavi clan of Vaisali, she was married in early fourth century to Chandragupta of Magadh. Her marriage to him was responsible for the rise of the Gupta empire, and Chandragupta himself recognized his debt to his queen and her people by striking his gold coins in the joint names of himself and Kumara Devi. Her son, the great Samudragupta, who succeeded to the throne in about 330, always described himself as ‘the son of the daughter of the Lichchhavi’.
