Jodha Bai

Jodha Bai, 1619. Rajput princess, one of the wives of Emperor Akbar. Her original name was Jagat Gosaini, or Balmati, she was called Jodha Bai as she was a pincess of Jodhpur. Daughter of Raja Maldeo of Udaipur, she was married to Emperor Akbar in 1569 by her brother Udai Singh, and was the first Rajput princess to be given to a Mughal emperor. She soon became a favourite of the Emperor, and both made a pilgrimage on foot to Ajmer at the shrine of Muin-ud-Din Chisti to pray for a son, who was born the same year and named Salim (later Emperor Jahangir). Differences later developed between Jodha Bai and Akbar, and she poisoned herself. Her apartment built in Hindu style at Fatehpur Sikri still stands, but her tomb near Agra which stood till 1840 was destroyed by the British soldiery.
