Milton Friedman

Milton Friedman (1912), U-S economist, a leading proponent of monetarism. Friedman carried out economic research for various government bureaus be-fore becoming professor of economics at Chicago University (1948-82). He is well known for his theory that control of the money supply is the best cure for inflation and his advocacy of free markets with minimal government intervention. In the 1980s these ideas had a major influence on economic policy in both the US and Britain. His publications include Capitalism and Freedom (1962), Money Mischief (1992), and (with his wife Rose Friedman) Free to Choose (1980).
