Andre Gide
Andre Gide (1869-1951), French novelist. Although he married in 1895, he led an active homosexual life after 1893. He made his reputation as a critic, co-founding the influential New French Review in 1908. Throughout his life he was torn between puritan and pagan instincts, a conflict that is reflected in his novels, which include Strait is the Gate (1909), The Vatican Swindle (1914), and The Counterfeiters (1926). He is also remembered for his Journals of the years 1889-1949. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1947.
