Giotto

Giotto (1267-1337), Florentine painter. In 1296 he began the frescoes in the Church of St Francis at Assisi. Subsequently he worked in many other Italian cities. He became official architect of Florence in 1334 and master of the cathedral there. His pictures display action, movement, and narrative power, marking the transition from Gothic formalism to the realism of the Renaissance.
