Hema Prabha Majumdar

Hema Prabha Majumdar, 1882-1962, political worker. Born in an enlightened family of Noakhali district, Bengal, she was married to the well known leader, Basanta Kumar Mazumdar (1876-1944) when only 12. Originally a bashful wife observing purdah, she joined the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1921 and was one of its most active workers. She was closely associated with her husband in all his political achievements and suffered imprisonment. Even after she was widowed in 1944, she continued to be politically active and was a member of the provincial legislature of Bengal. She lost the election in 1952, and later withdrew from active politics. Her two sons were also active political workers.
