Johannes Gutenberg

Johannes Gutenberg (1390-1468), German printer, who invented a method of printing from movable metal type. He worked initially with goldsmiths in Strasbourg but had financial troubles and formed his own printing business. The first printed Bible (1455) is attributed to him. His method has only really, been superseded in the 20th century, with the development of lithographic printing, phototypesetting, and computer technology.
