Zainab Agha

Zainab Agha, 1429-37, Bahamani princess. Daughter of Nasir Khan, the ruler of Khandesh, she was given away by her father in marriage (ca. 1429) to Ala-ud-Din il, the son and heir to the Bahmani sultan, Ahmad Shah. Her husband, when he came to the throne (1443) took a new queen, Pari Chehra, the beautiful daughter of the Raja of Sangameshwar during his Konkan campaign (1436). Finding herself neglected and ousted from favour by a younger rival, she complained to her father against her ill-treatment. The father, in association with the sultans of Gujarat and Malwa, started hostilities against the Bahmani kingdom in 1437. Though successful in the beginning, her father was completely defeated by the forces of her husband and driven away from the Bahmani territory. The defeat so affected her father that he died soon after (20 September 1437).
