Zebunnisa

Zebunnisa, 1638-1702, Mughal princess. Eldest daughter of Aurangzeb, by his principal wife, Dilras Banu Begam, she was a gifted scholar and a poet and wrote verses under the pen-name of Makhfi. She was a great supporter of her younger brother, Muhammad Akbar who rebelled against his father. When the rebellion failed, and her letters fell into the hand of her father, she was imprisoned at Delhi, in 1681. Her property was confiscated, her pension stopped, and she was confined in Salimgarh till her death. She was buried in Delhi but her tomb was demolished by the British to make a railway line. Her romance with one Aqil Khan is pure fiction.
