Henry IV
Henry IV, known as Henry of Navarre (1553-1610). King of France. He was educated as a Calvinist and after 1569 was recognized as the leader of the Huguenots, the French Calvinists. Although he succeeded to the French throne in 1589, it took, a further ten years of religious wars to establish his position. He was converted to Catholicism in 1593 but signed the Edict of Nantes (1598) granting freedom of worship to Protestants. He married Marie de’ Medici in 1600, after his first marriage was annulled. He was assassinated by a religious fanatic.
