Werner Karl Heisenberg
Werner Karl Heisenberg (1901-76). German physicist. In 1927. he invented a mathematical system, called matrix mechanics, to explain the structure of the hydrogen atom in terms of Planck’s quantum theory. In the Same year he announced his uncertainty principle, which has had a profound effect on both physics and philosophy. In 1932 he was awarded a Nobel Prize. Heisenberg was one of the few scientists to remain in Germany during the Nazi period, when he headed Hitler’s unsuccessful attempt to make an atom bomb.
