Jean de La Fontaine

Jean de La Fontaine, (1621-95). French poet and writer of fables. He was employed for a time as master of waters and forests in Chateau-Thierry but from 1656 he lived in Paris, supported by a series of noble patrons. He is best known for his Tales (1664-74) and his Fables (1668-94), which are based on those attributed to Aesop.
