Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ (c. 4 BC-C. 29 AD). The founder of Christianity, one of the major religions of the world. According to biblical tradition he was born of the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem, and was brought up as a Jew. His public ministry began at the age of 30 and lasted only three years. He claimed to be the Son of God who could forgive sins, and authenticated this claim by performing miracles. Humility before God and love of one’s neighbour were the essence of his teaching. The Jewish religious leaders feared his power and he was betrayed by one of his disciples, Judas, and brought to trial. Although it could not be prove that he had done anything wrong, he was crucified by the Roman authorities. Three days after his death, his followers claimed that he had risen from the tomb and had appeared physically on several occasions before ascending into heaven. The life and death of Christ have had a profound effect on millions of people throughout history.
