Joseph II

Joseph II (1741-90). Holy Roman Emperor. He succeeded his father Francis I in 1765, but gained real power only after the death of his mother, Maria Theresa, in 1780. He introduced many reforms in an unsuccessful bid to modernize the Austrian Habsburg lands. For his efforts he is considered to be one of the 18th century’s `enlightened despots’.
