Stonewall Jackson

Stonewall Jackson (1824-63). US general. He served in Mexico and taught artillery tactics at the Virginia Military Institute before joining the Confederate army in the American Civil War. He earned his nick-name for his solid defence at the Battle of Bull Run (1861) and had further successes against Federal forces in the Shenandoah Valley and at Fredericksburg (1862). Fighting with General Lee at Chancellorsville, near Washington, Jackson was accidentally shot by his own men. He had his left arm amputated, but died ten days later.
