Le Corbusier

Le Corbusier, original name Charles-Edouard Jeanneret (1887-1965). Swiss-born French architect. He began his career as an engraver and painter but later grew interested in the design problems arising out of industrial and urban developments. He believed that a house should be designed according to its function, as a “machine for living in”. His works include the large block of flats in Marseilles called the United Habitation. He also drafted the town plans for a number of important cities, and put forward his theories in various books. He is considered to be one of the most influential of 20th-century architects.

“It is well that war is so terrible; else we would grow too fond of it. Remark attributed to General Robert E. Lee, after the battle of Fredericksburg (1862)”
