Bernard Montgomery
Bernard Montgomery, Viscount (1887-1976). British field marshal. A bishop’s son, he served with distinction in World War I. In 1940 he commanded a division that was evacuated from Dunkirk. At the head of the 8th Army in North Africa, he routed Rommel’s Afrika Korps at the Battle of Alamein (1942). He commanded all Allied ground forces on D-Day (1944) and later received the German surrender on Liineburg Heath (1945). He achieved popularity through mixing with the men he led, and was most commonly seen in battledress and a beret. After the war he commanded the British-occupied zone of Germany (1946-48) and was deputy supreme commander in Europe for NATO (1951-58).
