Henry Moore

Henry Moore, (1898-1986). British sculptor and artist. He studied at the Royal College of Art and began producing sculpture in 1922. In his sculptures of the human figure he attempted to remain faithful to the nature of the block of wood or stone he was using as material; later works were cast in bronze. He was influenced by primitive art and by surrealist and abstract works. During World War II he acted as an official war artist and produced moving realistic drawings of the war’s affect on civilians. He gained international recognition soon after the war. There were major exhibitions of his work in New York (1946), London (1968), and Florence (1972).
