Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi

Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, (1746-1823). Swiss educational reformer. Inspired by Rousseau’s educational theories, he started a school for poor children on his estate at Stanz. The school aimed to make the children self-reliant and able to think for themselves. Although the. scheme failed, Pestalozzi gained valuable experience and set out his ideas in the novel Leonard and Gertrude (1781-87), which was widely read. His later schools were more successful and he greatly influenced the development of primary school education.
