Julius Nyerere

Julius Nyerere, (1922- ). Tanzanian statesman; president (1962-85). After studying at Makerere College in Uganda and Edinburgh University he formed (1954) the Tanganyika African National Union to fight for Tanganyikan independence. When this was achieved, in 1960, Nyerere became chief minister, assuming the presidency in 1962. In 1964 the country changed its name to Tanzania, after union with Zanzibar. Nyerere ruled a one-party state until his retirement as president in 1985; he retired as party chairman in 1990.
