Robert Owen

Robert Owen, (1771-1858). Welsh industrialist and re-former. In 1880 he became the co-owner of a mill at New Lanark, Scotland, where he introduced schemes to improve the conditions of the workers and their families. The community was visited by many other social reformers, who regarded it as a model for future experiments. Owen’s attempts to establish cooperative communities elsewhere were less successful.
