Sir Ralph Richardson

Sir Ralph Richardson, (1902-83). British stage actor, noted particularly for his Shakespearean roles. Having made his debut in 1921, he regularly appeared at the Old Vic from 1930 onwards; many of his famous performances are associated with that theatre. He was knighted in 1947. Although principally a stage actor, he appeared in about 50 films, notably Anna Karenina (1948), The Looking-Glass War (1968), and Greystoke (1984), in which he played Tarzan’s grandfather.
