Charles Stewart Rolls

Charles Stewart Rolls, (1877-1910). British pioneer motorist and aviator. He became a motor dealer in 1902 and in 1904 met Sir Frederick Henry Royce, who was then producing experimental cars. In 1906 the two men founded a company, Rolls-Royce Limited, to produce luxury cars. Rolls was also the first man to fly across the English Channel and back non-stop (1910); he was killed in a flying accident later that year. Royce de-signed his first aero-engine, the Eagle, in 1914, and this was widely used in World War I.
